The Traveling Plate Heads to Maui

When you think of Easter Seals a few things come to mind… Nonprofit, making disabilities abilities and for some they might recall the massive “Taste of Honolulu” event, held for 15 years until 2006. The annual food and fundraising effort (led by Easter Seals) hit the pause button and decided to focus on the charity’s primary mission. Now, a decade later, a new and improved iteration of the food feast has launched and takes the tasty tradition statewide.

Welcome The Traveling Plate, a culinary journey that showcases local sought-after chefs, highlights Hawaii’s diverse ingredients and serves as a fundraiser directly supporting Easter Seals statewide.

“The Traveling Plate is a contemporary extension of Easter Seals Hawaii’s decades old tradition of connecting food and fun with awareness of our mission to empower people with disabilities and special needs,” Ron Brandvold, President & CEO of Easter Seals Hawaii said.

Over the years Easter Seals has helped many local residents (children, adults and families) with disabilities live a more independent life. “On Maui we provide personal support for youth, adults and group programs for adults. We customize each program’s hours and goals to meet the needs of each individual receiving services,” Crystal Romero, Program Manager, Easter Seals Maui said. One triumphant example that showcases the dedication, hard work and impact of this organization’s mission — tells the story of a Maui man who learned how to independently ride the bus.

“He took the bus with support staff a couple of days a week for months; to learn routes, learn to buy a bus pass, learn to ask the driver questions if he needed help. One day he was concerned because he had an event on the weekend, a day he did not have support staff and was not sure how he would be able to get where he needed to go that day. We talked to him about taking the bus but it was not a route he practiced regularly. He and his staff practiced that route the week leading up to the event and he successfully made it to his swim meet in Kihei. He now takes the bus to the mall to see a movie independently and is confident in his ability to get where he wants to go!”

The Traveling Plate Maui 8/19 6-8pm tickets $100 VIP, $65 general admission.

The Traveling Plate statewide culinary tour stops in Maui at Sugar Beach Events in Kihei, Saturday, August 19 6pm-8pm. The grazing event, showcasing local Maui ingredients, will highlight the talents of: Celebrity Chef Lee Anne Wong from Koko Head Cafe, Chef Eric Morrissette of Fleetwoods on Front Street and Chef Bella Toland from Travaasa Hana.
