Maui Rescue Dog’s Story Earns MHS Petco Grant

A dog’s healing touch helped the Maui Humane Society earn a grant from the Petco Foundation.

MHS was the recipient of a $10,000 grant through the foundation’s Holiday Wishes campaign, thanks to a story submitted by Maui resident Josephine Tempongko, who shared how her rescue dog got her family through a harrowing ordeal.

Shortly after the birth of Tempongko’s son, Wally, complications arose. The newborn, faced with life-threatening bacterial meningitis, was airlifted to Oahu, accompanied by Tempongko’s husband.

Suffering from delivery complications of her own, Tempongko was left on Maui to worry endlessly as she tried to recover. What was a heartbreaking situation soon got a little brighter.

Tempongko says the turning point was when her neighbor brought her beloved dog Dottie to visit in the hospital.

“I don’t know if I fully realized just how important Dottie was to me until the moment I saw her running toward my wheelchair, her whole body shaking with excitement,” Tempongko said. “I cannot describe the joy and relief I felt. I sobbed while she licked my tears away. She healed me in a way no hospital ever could. Being able to hold her again gave me strength and comfort and my condition started to improve.”

Soon, Tempongko was reunited with her newborn son and today, the family is healthy and happy with Dottie by their side.

MHS has an additional chance to receive grant funding from Petco as the public is invited to vote for their favorite Holiday Wishes story through December 19. The top five organizations will receive grant funding ranging from $5,000 to $25,000. The public is invited to vote by clicking here. Winners will be announced before Christmas.

This year, the Petco Foundation granted 51 Holiday Wishes across the country for a total of $755,000 in grant awards, supporting the year-round lifesaving efforts of animal welfare organizations.
