Pedestrian Critically Injured in Overnight Kihei Crash

At 1:19 a.m. on Saturday, a motor vehicle collision occurred on Maui Veteran’s Highway south of mile-marker 6 in Kihei.

Maui Police Department officials say the collision occurred as a 22-year-old male pedestrian was walking within the outermost northbound lane of the roadway when he was struck by a red 1996 Jeep Cherokee traveling north in the same lane.

The male pedestrian was transported to the hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-female, was not injured in the collision. Initial investigation reveals she was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The northbound lane of the highway was closed for about two and a half hours as police conducted their investigation.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
