Annual Maui Okinawan Festival Returns to Maui Mall

The Maui Okinawan Kenjin Kai, along with co-sponsor Maui Mall, will hold its Maui Okinawan Festival on Saturday September 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Maui Mall in Kahului.

“Chibariyo!” (Do Your Best!) is the theme of the Festival being chaired by Janet Miyahira and Christine Hondo, with support from MOKK members and friends.

The entertainment program will feature continuous Okinawan music and dance performed by homegrown talent from Maui, as well as performers from Oahu. Dance, Sanshin, Taiko, Iaido, all take the stage.  The headliner is the dynamic Chinagu Eisa from Honolulu, performing Eisa taiko to both traditional and modern music.

A craft fair featuring the arts, crafts and jewelry of vendors from Maui and Oahu is planned during the event.

The Maui Festival will also feature delicious pig’s feet soup; an Okinawan plate lunch, chow fun; everyone’s favorite andagi along with a new favorite:  Taco Rice (taco goodies on rice).

Professional photo sessions in traditional Okinawan wear by Nagamine Photo Studio will also be available for children and adults with all proceeds to benefit MOKK.

The Country Store will feature homemade pickles, jams and jellies, maki sushi and baked goods.

In addition, games and activities are planned for keiki and festival t-shirts will be available for sale.
