Emergency crews in South Maui responded to the north side of Wailea Beach for an unresponsive male pulled from the ocean just after noon on Tuesday.
Wailea firefighters arrived at 12:16 p.m. and found bystanders on the beach performing CPR on a male victim fronting the Wailea Beach Villas. Fire crews took over CPR until paramedics arrived a short time later.
Emergency crews continued CPR and advanced lifesaving treatment, but despite all efforts the victim could not be revived.
The victim, a 56-year-old male visiting from Colorado was pronounced dead at the
Officials say the Colorado man had been snorkeling with a family member when he ran into trouble.
The man was found floating face down and was brought to shore with the help of bystanders and the family member.
Once onshore bystanders and hotel staff from a nearby resort began performing CPR.
Firefighters and paramedics from Wailea responded to the incident.
