Oliva Enters the Central Pacific as Category 1 Hurricane

At 5 p.m. on Saturday, the center of Hurricane Olivia was located about 935 miles east of Hilo.

Olivia is moving toward the west near 16 mph. This motion is expected to continue with some slowing in forward speed through Monday. A turn toward the west-southwest is expected by Tuesday. On the forecast track, Olivia will be near the main Hawaiian Islands later Tuesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 80 mph with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours, with gradual weakening expected afterward.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles.
