Maui Electric Supports Boy Scouts STEM Program

Maui Electric Company recently presented the Maui County Council, Boy Scouts of America with a $15,000 donation to support its STEM Scouts program. The donation, provided by Maui Electric’s Hawaiian Electric Industries Charitable Foundation, will help with participatory costs and outreach efforts.

STEM Scouts is a co-ed program serving youth from the 3rd grade through the 12th grade. The goal of the program is to grow skills and character through hands-on, experiential learning activities and interaction with STEM professionals. STEM Scouts is designed to be immersive, inspire creativity and problem solving, and encourage independent thinking. Students learn communication, cooperation, leadership skills, ethics, and the value of others’ efforts.

“We’re so grateful for the generous donation to support our STEM program,” said Duc Button, Scout executive of the Maui County Council Boy Scouts of America. “This money will be used to provide needed STEM labs and programs and enable us to reach more youth in Maui County.”

Since its origin in 1910, Scouting programs have been an educational experience concerned with values. The first activities for Scouts were designed to build character, physical fitness, practical skills and service. Today, Scouting’s youth development, education, and character initiatives strive to instill and facilitate in young people, outlooks which value citizenship and respect for civil society; individual responsibility; strong moral character; and respect for family.

“Maui Electric is proud to support our local STEM programs with the hope that our youth are inspired and encouraged to pursue careers in STEM-related fields,” said Sharon Suzuki, president of Maui Electric. “We commend the Maui County Council Boy Scouts of America for their decades of helping to build our future leaders.”

HEICF supports numerous organizations and programs that steward and preserve the environment, improves the economic well-being of the state, and helps youth reach their full potential.
