MFD Airlifts Two People from Makamaka`ole Gulch

On June 29, Fire Crews responded to a mountain rescue at Makamaka`ole Gulch near Mile Marker 8 on Kahekili Hwy (1 mile past Camp Maluhia entrance).

The parties were jumping and swimming in a pond that was approximately 15 to 20 minute hike from the roadway after one of them got injured. The incident commander determined that the conditions were unsafe to attempt rescue on foot; crews were able to safely complete air operations prior to nightfall.

Air 1 airlifted both parties up to safety. The Patient attempted to jump into the pond from approximately 60’ and was injured. The 21-year-old male suffered non-life threatening injuries to both lower legs and was transported by ambulance to Maui Memorial. The patient is a Kahului resident.

Engine 1, Rescue 10, Air 1, and Medic 10 responded to this incident.
