At about 9:22 p.m. on Sunday, a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred on Haliimaile Road southwest of Hoomalie Place in Haliimaile.

Maui Police Department officials say that their preliminary investigation revealed a silver Honda Accord sedan was traveling northeast on Haliimaile Road when it crossed left of center and collided with the driver’s side of a silver Land Rover Discovery SUV which was traveling in the opposite direction.

After the Honda sideswiped the Land Rover, the Honda continued traveling left of center when it collided head-on with a grey Nissan sedan which was also traveling in the opposite direction on Haliimaile Road.

The Honda was being operated by a 23-year-old female resident of Paia. The operator was the lone occupant in the Honda. She was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

A passenger in the Nissan sedan, identified as 39-year-old Teresa Pham of Spring, Texas sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. The 48 year old male operator of the Nissan sedan, along with a 50 year old female passenger, a 50 year old male passenger and a 14 year old juvenile passenger were all transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center due to injuries sustained as a result of the collision. All four remain hospitalized as of this press release. The occupants of this vehicle were all visitors to Maui and were reported to have been on their way to the airport when this collision occurred.

The Land Rover SUV had a total of five occupants when it was sideswiped by the Honda. None of the five occupants in the Land Rover were transported to the hospital.

The roadway was closed for about four hours while police conducted their investigation.

The use of seatbelts by all involved is currently under investigation. The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol have yet to be determined as well.

This is Maui County’s tenth traffic fatality of 2019 as compared to four this time last year.
