Expect effects from Hurricane Erick late Thursday night

Thursday, we will have some passing trade showers for windward and mauka spots and breezy easterly trades of 15-25 mph. Central and West Maui will see more sunshine and will be warm with temperatures again expected to hit the upper 80s to 90 degrees. Hurricane Erick is forecast to weaken as it passes south of the island Friday. Even though the center of circulation will pass to our south some of the moisture will interact with the trade winds. This could result in periods of rainfall late Thursday night – Saturday. Also, bigger surf can be expected to build on East facing shores. Behind Erick, Hurricane Flossie has lost strength. It could near the islands in a weakened state early next week as it moves over cooler waters and some increased wind shear. It’s too early to tell what the exact impacts of Flossie will be but surf and rain are likely with possible wind depending on the storms strength.
