UPDATE: Cove Beach Closed After Shark Bite

The Department of Land and Natural Resourcces has closed the beaches from Cove beach to Maui VFW due to a shark bite. People are advised to avoid the area.

At 9:17 a.m., a female on a surfboard approximately 150 yards from shore was seen calling for help in the ocean fronting 1554 Halama St. in Kihei.

Upon arrival, Engine 6 personnel met up with the victim who already made it to shore. She reported that a 6-7 foot shark bit the back of her board. The victim was reportedly shaken, but unharmed. Ocean Safety personnel on a jetski cleared the waters of ocean goers in the immediate vicinity and continued patrolling the area.
