A pedestrian died on Thursday after a vehicle collided with the victim on Lanai Avenue, ten feet north of Sixth Street.
Maui Police Department officials say the collision occurred when a 2018 Ford pickup truck, operated by a 55-year-old man was traveling northbound on Lanai Avenue. The operator of the truck reportedly collided into a pedestrian crossing the street.
Officials say the preliminary investigation reveals the pedestrian identified as Christine Sandi was legally within the roadway crossing west to east.
Sandi was transported to Lanai Community Hospital in critical life-threatening condition where she later succumbed to her injuries and died.
The driver of the truck was not injured.
Police say the driver of the truck was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision. Airbags did not deploy.
The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.
This is Maui County’s 20th traffic fatality of 2019, as compared to sixteen at this same time last year.
